Janice Gayle Freitag, the daughter of Edward and Ruthe (Phillips) Bodway, was born on January 31, 1938 in St. Louis County near Cloquet, MN. Janice grew up in the Tamarack area and graduated high school in McGregor, MN in 1955. She moved to Minneapolis and married Richard Peterson. To this union three children were born, Denise, Charles, and Darcy. Janice raised her family in North Minneapolis, before moving to Alexandria in 1968. Janice and Richard owned the Lake Café until 1973. After Richard’s death in 1972, Janice married Leonard Freitag in August of 1973. She then worked at the Skelly Restaurant for many years before taking a position in the dietary area at Knute Nelson until her retirement in 2008.
Janice was an intelligent and independent woman who loved to read. She liked trivia and enjoyed watching game shows like Jeopardy and playing games on her computer. Janice loved her family especially her great grandchildren. She will be missed by those who knew and loved her.
Janice G. Freitag, died on Thursday, August 25, 2022, at Alomere Health in Alexandria at the age of 84 years old. She is survived by her children, Charles Peterson of Alexandria, Denise Winter of New York, and Darcy (Darwin) Brechbiel of Carlos; grandchildren, Justin (Karla) Winter, Jessica (Eric) Jones, Jeremy Vandenberg, Kelly (CJ) Kohlhofer, Jacob Brechbiel, and Joshua (Enid Chile) Brechbiel; 10 great grandchildren; brothers, Kenneth (Carol) Bodway and Kim (Beverly) Lundeen; sisters, Kathleen (Duane) Betker and Julie Burdick; and step children: Darrell (Debbie) Freitag, Ken (Joyce) Freitag, Karen (Brian) Larson and Nancy Freitag.
She was preceded in death by her parents, spouses, Richard Peterson and Leonard Freitag, and her brother Phillip Bodway.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, at 11 AM at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Mark Schwarz officiating.
A visitation will take place one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
Interment will be in the Finnish Apostolic Cemetery.
Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
