Janice Carol Schultz was born on December 25, 1931 the daughter of Richard and Hazel (Gilland) Frederiksen of Redwood Falls, Minnesota. After graduating from Morgan High School in 1949, Janice attended Mankato State University for two years and earned her teaching degree in 1951. She later completed a four year teaching degree at St. Cloud State University and earned her master's degree from the University of Morris.
Jan taught in Jasper MN for one year and married Russell Donald Schultz on June 17, 1952 in Morgan, MN. They were blessed with five children; Jeff, Becky, Heidi, Kim and Greg. Russ and Jan met at the country school they both attended as children and were reintroduced as adults through Russ's cousin Marlene, who was Jan's best friend. After they were married, they moved to Wichita Falls, TX where he was stationed in the Air Force. Three months later, Russ was sent to Greenland for a year and Jan returned to Morgan MN to teach. They moved back to Wichita Falls and lived there until Russ was discharged from the Air Force in 1954. They then returned to MN to farm in the Morgan and Sleepy Eye areas.
In 1964, Jan and Russ moved to Alexandria MN where they purchased Bayview Resort on Lake Le Homme Dieu. Everyone was welcome where extra and "adopted" kids were often found at the supper table. They operated the resort for 12 years until it was sold in April 1976. Jan always said she thought their kids learned a lot from the resort. They learned to work hard and to interact with different types of people.
Jan and Russ built a home on Lake Ida in Alexandria where they held many family gatherings and created priceless memories for 30 years. Christmas and 4th of July were special times that brought all of the family together. Jan was well known for her tea ring and her waffles smothered with whipped cream and strawberries for breakfast. Often times one of her grandchildren could be found sitting on the kitchen counter "helping."
Jan started her teaching career in the Alexandria area as the only teacher in a one room schoolhouse in Forada. Each Christmas she put on a Christmas program that her students performed while she accompanied them on the piano. Every year, she seemed to outdo the previous year. She later transferred to the Carlos, Miltona and Garfield schools before retiring from Voyager Elementary in 1994. Jan had a passion for kids and poured her heart into her students, her children and her grandchildren. She was a valuable resource for her kids as they navigated the job of raising their kids.
Jan believed everyone needed a routine and walking was an essential part of her routine. She believed that whatever was bothering you could be improved with a good walk. She loved walking with Sammy their dog during the warm months and walking the track at the Y when the weather was cooler. Jan and Russ were also avid bikers and rode many trails in MN and AZ. After retiring, Jan and Russ enjoyed spending their winters in Arizona, where it was "dry underfoot" and they could bike or walk every day. Jan also enjoyed the crafts and line dancing in AZ.
When they were back in Alexandria, Jan and Russ enjoyed creating handcrafted Christmas decorations. Together they created reindeer, sleighs, trees, mailboxes and nativity scenes. Many of our family homes are decorated with their handiwork.
Jan was a loving, caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who is already deeply missed. Jan passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2017, surrounded by her family, at the age of eighty-five.
