John “Jack” Engdahl was born on September 4, 1937, the son of George and Judith (Nelson) Engdahl in St. Paul, Minnesota. Jack was raised in NE Minneapolis where he attended school and Emmanuel Lutheran Church. At a young age he started working at a gas station and then in 1959 worked for the City of Minneapolis as a Mechanic. He was employed with the city for over 30 years.
On January 3, 1959, Jack was united in marriage to Bernice Nelson at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. The couple made their home in NE Minneapolis where they raised their five children. Jack was very involved in his church community where he served on the church council, was president, and in the church choir. He also was active in the Special Olympics and very involved at the Hammer Residence where his daughter Jean was. While the kids were in school Jack was President of the PTA.
During their retirement years Jack and Bernie moved to Alexandria where they built their home near Lake Ida. Jack was very involved at Shalom Lutheran Church and he and Bernie enjoyed square dancing with a group at the church. He was a member of the Lions Club while living in Alexandria. Jack will be remembered as a very faithful, kind man who was always there for his family and friends and had a wonderful sense of humor.
Jack died on Friday, September 16, 2022. He is survived by his four children: Jill Kelly & husband, Michael of Eagan, MN, Julie Engdahl & partner, Anne Sebastian of Lancaster, PA; son, John Engdahl & wife, Julie of Lakeville, MN; Jodi Schott & husband, Phil of Merrifield, MN; grandchildren, Braden Engdahl, Katei Kelly, Amber Fagan, Tate Engdahl, Erik Kelly, Kayla Engdahl, Rachel Kelly, Emily Engdahl, Parker Schott, Emma Schott; great grandchildren: Katarina Engdahl, Autumn Fagan, Ariel Fagan; brother, Randy Engdahl & wife, Betty.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernie; daughter, Jean; parents and sister, Lois.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2022, 10:00 – 11:00 AM at Shalom Lutheran Church in Alexandria with Memorial Service at 11:00 AM.
