Joseph Clark Martin, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, departed this world on December 4, 2024, at the age of 80. Born on August 11, 1944, in Buffalo, Minnesota, Joe lived a life filled with love, laughter, and a dedication to service.
Joe graduated from Buffalo High School in 1962 and went on to attend Barber School, beginning his journey in the pursuit of making people feel valued through his craft. In 1965, he married his cherished high school sweetheart, Linda Mattson, with whom he shared a lifelong bond that began in kindergarten. Together, they were blessed with two wonderful children, Kelli and Josh, the latter of whom sadly passed away in 1995.
A devoted Marine, Joe answered the call of duty and served valiantly in the US Marine Corps (Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines) in Vietnam from 1966 to 1968. He was a Purple Heart recipient. He wore and shared his Marine hats and shirts with pride. Following his military service, he contributed to his family’s asphalt business and later ventured abroad to work in Saudi Arabia, enriching his family's life with new experiences from 1978 - 1989.
Joe’s true calling was found in hospitality, where he devoted many years as the owner of Shor-Wood Resort in Alexandria, Minnesota (1986-2004). His warmth and attentiveness drew countless guests to him, and he took great pride in remembering their names, hometowns, and family stories. Joe had a remarkable talent for making others feel important, valued, and cherished. A unique man with an infectious smile and a great sense of humor, he connected deeply with people from all walks of life.
Joe loved being outdoors, catching fish, cooking, reading, playing pool, watching sports, and spending quality time with friends and family. His legacy of kindness and generosity will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
Joseph is survived by his devoted wife, Linda Martin; daughter Kelli (Steve) Moore; granddaughter Madelyn (Jack) Moore; grandson Erik Moore; brothers Bill (Marcie) Martin and Jerry (Ardee) Vealitzek; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cherished relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Camille and Bernice (Klatt) Martin; son Josh Martin; sister Vonnie (Don) Durfee; brother Dick Martin; niece Kim Edwards; and parents-in-law Honey and Arnie Mattson, along with brothers-in-law Robb Mattson, Reed Mattson, and Larry Huston.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the amazing staff from Knute Nelson Hospice for the compassionate care they provided to Joe in his final days. Your kindness, dedication, and support will never be forgotten. You truly made a difference, and we are forever grateful.
