Julia Bertha Nightengale was born February 16, 1918 in Orton Township near Nimrod, MN, the daughter of Julius George and Frieda (Madlung) Nightengale. She attended the country school near her home. Julia was united in marriage to Otto Plagman on January 25, 1941. They made their home in Alexandria, MN. Otto died June 11, 1961 in Alexandria, MN. Julia and Otto worked for North American Creameries in Alexandria and Julia continued on as manager after Otto died in 1961. She continued working there until the plant closed. Julia then worked at Fingerhut until she reached retirement age. Julia enjoyed keeping a very large vegetable garden. She loved sharing what she grew with friends and neighbors. Julia also enjoyed the outdoors. She took long walks daily, observing nature and looking after her neighborhood. Julia was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church. For many years she served as a dedicated member of the funeral lunch committee. On Wednesday, June 3, 2009 Julia died at the age of ninety-one years. Her parents, and infant brother, Chistopher, and five older sisters, Marie Herlofson, Emma Nightengale, Margaret Sobrack, Anna Tappe and Clara Frame preceded her in death. Julia is survived by nieces, Kathy Sternberg; Joyce Ward, Edythe Clark and Karla Hodgson; nephews, Roderick Sobrack and Nathan Frame; and several good friends. A funeral service was held on Tuesday, June 9, 2009at Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Rev. William Moeller and Rev. David Hinz officiated. Irma Brockberg and Dan Olson provided music. Interment followed at the Kinkead Cemetery in Alexandria. Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
