Kathryn (Kay) Alyce Bragdon Harstad, age 79, died on Monday, March 17, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded with the love of her family and friends. Kay was born on October 19, 1928, in Omaha, NE to Vera (Hanson) and Douglas Bragdon. She graduated from high school in Sioux City, IA and then went on to receive her teaching certificate from the University of Nebraska in 1950. In 1952, Kay married Richard (Dick) Harstad and they had three children. She taught school in Sioux City and in Alexandria, MN, ultimately focusing on special education. In 1990 she was honored as Alexandria Teacher of the Year. Kay retired in 1992. Kay loved life and made friends easily. She was very active in her church, First Congregational UCC, P.E.O., card clubs, birthday clubs, Red Hats, and numerous other groups. She was always game for a round of golf or a boat ride, and she loved being outdoors. Kay lent a helping hand whenever needed and knit hundreds of scarves, hats, layettes and other items for those in need. We will remember her for her zest for life, sense of humor and can-do attitude. We thank her for all that she taught us and for all of the joy she brought to our lives. We also thank all of you who cared for and supported Kay these last two years. You made this journey easier and we send you big hugs with lots of love, just like you gave mom. Kay was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Robert Bragdon; daughter-in-law, Lori Harstad.
