Lawrence John Kvitek, the son of Frank and Anna (Prchal) Kvitek, was born on September 1, 1927 in Reno Township, MN. The family then moved to Urness Township in Douglas County where Lawrence and his siblings helped out on the farm with daily chores and the farming. Lawrence continued to help his dad with the farming until he moved to Alexandria when he was 18 years old. He got a job unloading railroad cars full of produce for local stores in the area. Lawrence also helped install floor coverings. He soon began his own business Kvitek Floor Covering. He worked closely with Anderson Furniture Store installing all of their carpet and floors to their customers. In the 60’s Lawrence and his brother Norman Started L&N Jobbing. They also began K&K Sports in Alexandria until the late 70’s when Lawrence went back to installing floor coverings. He continued installing floor coverings for many years until his health dictated his time to retire.
Lawrence married the love of his life Mary Elizabeth Smith on July 12, 1948 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Millerville. The couple lived in Alexandria and were blessed with three children, Michael, Catherine, and Winifred. Lawrence loved his family and enjoyed family gatherings so he could tell his stories. He also loved the outdoors. He was seen frequently tending to his garden in the summer, growing many vegitables. He liked deer hunting and deer camp to spend time with family and friends and to tell more stories. Fishing was a pastime he enjoyed as well. He even named his fish house the “Sunfish Inn”. Lawrence will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Lawrence J. Kvitek died on Thursday, December 31, 2015 at the Galeon Community Memorial Home in Osakis, MN at the age of 88 years old. He is survived by his son, Michael (Glenda) Kvitek of Alexandria; daughter, Catherine (Brian) Neese of Eagan; grandchildren, Kalin (Andria) Kvitek of Esko, MN and Heather (Ryan) Shaughnessy of Mosinee, WI; great grandchildren, Brennan and Aidan Shaughnessy and Ethan and Chase Kvitek; brother Norman (Audriene) Kvitek of Alexandria; sisters Adeline Hanson of Alexandria and Geneva Roers of Alexandria; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Kvitek; parents Frank and Anna Kvitek and daughter Winifred Wienhold.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 8, 2016 at 11AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alexandria with the Reverend Steve Binsfeld officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-7 PM on Thursday with a 4 PM Knights of Columbus Rosary and a 7 PM Prayer Service at the Anderson Funeral Home. There will be also be a visitation for one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Casket Bearers are Kalin Kvitek, Heather (Kvitek) Shaughnessy, Ryan Shaughnessy, Mike Bundy, Wayne Gease, and Rich Merten.
