Leona Cowan

Leona Irene (Paeper) Cowan was born on November 14, 1918 in Sac County, Iowa to Roy and Julia (Carter) Paeper. She married Martin Heidelbauer in 1938 and the couple were blessed with three children, William, Harlan and Janet. During their lifetime, they managed the Hatchery and Produce in several Iowa communities. They purchased the Sioux Rapids Hatchery and Produce in 1947 and made their home in Sioux Rapids for the next 50 years. In 1961, Leona married James P. Cowan and enjoyed life and traveling with him. Leona went home to be with the Lord on April 26, 2008 at the age of 89. She is survived by her son, Harlan (Linda) Heidelbauer of Waukon, IA; daughter, Janet (Harlan) Johnson of Alexandria; step-daughter, Barbara (Frank) Briggs of Mondamen, IA; 8 grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; brother, Robert (Hazel) Paeper of Sac City, IA; and nephews, Everett, Russell and Gale Paeper. Leona is preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Julia Paeper; son, William Heidelbauer; and husbands, Martin Heidelbauer and James Cowan. A funeral service was held on Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at First Lutheran Church in Alexandria with Reverend Greg Billberg officiating. Music was provided by organist, Randy Morken and soloist, Annetta Knowles. Interment was held in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids, IA. Casket bearers were Todd Heidelbauer, Jeffrey Johnson, Jody Johnson, William Heidelbauer, Dean Johnson and Beau Briggs. Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
