Loren Martwick

Loren Melvin Martwick was born on May 1, 1922 in Balfour, North Dakota on the family farm. He attended Balfour High School where he enjoyed playing basketball and graduated in 1940. Loren attended teachers college in Bottineau and Minot, ND. He taught in Balfour and Westby, CA. Loren was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Korea from 1946-1947. He returned home from the military and farmed with his father and brothers. Loren was united in marriage to Alice Enge on November 8, 1958 in Minneapolis. To this union the couple was blessed with a daughter, Kylene. The family continued to dairy and crop farm and Loren passed down his expertise and love of horses to his daughter, Kylene. Loren and Alice retired in 1982 and moved to Willmar, MN to be near their daughter. Loren worked a variety of jobs in Willmar. In 1991, Kylene and her family moved to Alexandria, and Loren and Alice followed. Loren enjoyed going to 4-H cattle shows and horse shows with his daughter, Kylene. He also had a beautiful voice and enjoyed singing at weddings, anniversaries and funerals. Loren died on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at Peaceful Bliss in Alexandria at the age of 90. He is survived by his wife, Alice of Alexandria, son-in-law, Kent Nelson of Brandon; grandchildren, Kristina and Kyle Nelson of Brandon, special niece, Valerie Dockter of Parks, AZ; special nephew, Larry Helmer of International Falls; one sister, Evelyn Evenrud of Salem, OR; brother-in-law, Vernon Enge of Crystal, MN; sister-in-law, Evelyn (Bob) St. Peters of International Falls and many nieces and nephews. Loren is preceded in death by his daughter, Kylene Nelson; parents, William and Susanna; five brothers, Walter, Alvin, Evan, Reuben and Herbert and two sisters, Lily and Viola. A funeral service was held on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at the Anderson Funeral Home with Reverend Michael Johnson officiating. Interment was held at Kinkead Cemetery in Alexandria. Military Honors were provided by Alexandria American Legion Post 87, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 936, and the Minnesota National Honor Guard.
