Mabel Lillian (Lund) Peterson, was born on July 10, 1921, the youngest of seven children to John and Annette (Knudson) Lund. She attended District #83 country school until the eighth grade, then attended Central High School, where she graduated in 1939. After graduation she worked as a stenographer and bookkeeper. On March 15, 1942 she married Lloyd Peterson in Las Vegas, Nevada. The couple moved to Los Angeles, California, where Lloyd worked for Lockheed. Later Lloyd joined the Air Force, so Mabel moved back to Alexandria. She worked for a number of years at Montgomery Ward. The couple became foster parents in 1954, and for the next thirty six years helped care for three hundred and seventy-seven children. In 1986, the couple were named the Minnesota Foster Parents of the Year.
Mabel enjoyed traveling. After retirement her and Lloyd wintered in Tuscon, Arizona. Mabel and Lloyd traveled to Alaska, and later she went to Scandinavia with her daughters. She was instrumental in starting the missions of world relief program at Calvary and part of the bible Hanna Circle. Mabel also enjoyed knitting, bingo, quilting, flower gardens and spending time with her family camping or at the casino. She helped do hair for a number of years in the Bethany community salon, helping residents look their best. She excelled at everything that she did, including making her families clothing. Often they would be seen out in public with all perfectly tailored matching outfits. Her passion for sewing she poured into use when she opened a doll shop in Alexandria; where she sewed, dressed and cleaned dolls and Lloyd restored and restrung dolls.
She is preceded in death by her husband of fifty-six years, Lloyd; siblings, Rose Lund, Myrtle Clark, Clinton Lund, Florence Franzen, Norman Lund and Ray Lund. She is survived by her children, Richard (Karen) Peterson, Phillip (Debra Chatelle) Peterson, Susan Peterson, Mark (Louise Gangelhoff) Peterson, Karen (Scott) Klein, Lisa (Jason) Fisher; grandchildren, Jeffrey Peterson, Nora Peterson, Rick (Rachel) Erickson, Jim (Rebecca) Rownd; great-grandchildren, Johanna Erickson, Helana Erickson, Colin Rownd; sister-in-law, Vangie Lund; and many nieces and nephews.
