Marcella “Marcy” Ann Melby was born on May 20, 1926 in Leven Township, Pope County, Minnesota to Theodore and Minnie (Prottengeier) Neumann. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Villard. Marcy graduated from Villard High School in 1944. After graduation she moved to the cities and lived with her sister and cousin. They went into defense work during the war and later worked at Munsingware in Minneapolis.
Marcy met Kenneth Melby at a wedding dance in Lowry. The couple was united in marriage on June 12, 1949 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Villard. Kenny was in the Navy where they traveled to many different states. Majority of the time they spent in California. After Kenny’s death in 1990, Marcy moved to Alexandria. She spent a lot of time volunteering at the Douglas County Food Shelf.
Marcy enjoyed garage sales, puzzles, cooking and baking which she was very good at, music especially hymns, going to the cabin, fishing and animals and with a special love for cockatiels and cats.
Marcy died on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at Bonnie’s Senior Haven in Alexandria at the age of 88. She is survived by her nieces, Jody (Erland) Mickelson of Hancock and Lori Neumann of Villard; nephews, Alan (Sandy) Backlund of Lafayette, CO and Curt (Robin) Backlund of Alexandria; cousin, Betty Dau of Alexandria. Marcy is preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Minnie; husband, Kenny; brother, Martin Neumann; and sister, Dorline Backlund.
A memorial service was held on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at First Lutheran Church with Reverend Kari van Wakeren. Music was provided by organist, Randy Morken. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Backus, MN.
