OBITUARY Marcella Mathilda Thoennes was born on April 1, 1920 in Millerville, MN the daughter of John A. and Mayme (Lorsung) Roers. She grew up in the Millerville area and was a member of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church where she was baptized, confirmed and attended Catholic grade school. On October 11, 1938 she was united in marriage to Lawrence Thoennes of Urbank. To this union three daughters Florence, Carol, and Linda, and five sons Roger, Robert, Rolland, Larry, and Jeffrey completed this family. After they were married they moved to Leaf Mountain to his sister?s farm for six years. They then purchased a farm near Urbank. In 1981, they retired to a house in Millerville, ?To go fishing? Marcella said, but never went. For the last five years Marcella lived at Bethel Manor and most recently at Edgewood Vista. Marcella was very active in her life by working with church groups, teaching religion, and singing in the church choir both in Millerville and Urbank. She was president of Christian Mothers in both parishes, chairman of Catholic Charities on the Deanery Level and active in the St. Katherine Mission Circle sewing quilts. Marcella also stayed active in her community by serving as president of Senior Clubs for many years in Urbank and Millerville. She was a remedial teacher in the Sacred Heart School and a news reporter for the Parkers Prairie Independent Paper. She volunteered as a senior driver for Ottertail and Douglas counties. Marcella had a number of hobbies as well, including playing cards, quilting, singing and dancing. She liked to perform in skits for any special occasion of a relative or friend. She also helped her husband with the farm work like milking cows, feeding calves, and driving tractor for harvesting. Marcella M. Thoennes died on Monday, January 13, 2014 at the Douglas County Hospital at the age of 93 years old. She is preceded in death by her husband Lawrence; sons Larry and Rolland Thoennes; great granddaughter Megan Carlson; parents; sisters LuAnn Sanford, Cordie Werrans, Donna Mae Owens and Luella Donbraski; and brothers Harold and Bernard Roers. She is survived by her daughters Florence (Joe) Byrne of Alexandria, Carol (Phil) Parent of Inver Grove Heights, Linda (Richard) Wagner of Millerville; sons Roger (Sharon) Thoennes of Crystal, Robert (Karen) Thoennes of Brandon, and Jeffrey (Cindy) Thoennes of Fargo, ND; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; sister Evelyn Lanners of Brandon and Lillian (Charles) Guenther of St. Peter; and sister-in-law Evelyn Roers of Alexandria. A Mass of Christian burial was held on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Millerville, MN with Father Matthew Crane officiating. Music was provided by Marcella?s granddaughter Kim Byrne and the Voices of Joy. Interment was in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Urbank, MN. Casket Bearers were Marcella?s children and Honorary Casket Bearers were all of Marcella?s grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
