Margaret Shirley (Douglas) Esala was born on March 31, 1920 in Montrose, Minnesota to Wilmot and Annie (Mumm) Douglas. She graduated from Montrose High School in 1937. Margaret attended Minnesota School of Business and worked for Minneapolis Abstract Company. When World War II started, she worked at the Defense Plant in Northeast Minneapolis. Margaret later enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurses Corp where she became a Registered Nurse.
On May 29, 1947, Margaret and Oscar were united in marriage. The couple made their home in Richfield. Margaret worked at Abbott Hospital as a nurse and went on to become a Nurse Anesthetist in 1958. She continued working at Abbott Northwestern Hospital as a Nurse Anesthetist until she retired. In 1991, Margaret and Oscar moved to Alexandria, MN to be closer to family and the lakes.
Margaret and Oscar were members of Wooddale Lutheran Church in Richfield and First Lutheran Church in Alexandria where she was active. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing cards and reading. She and Oscar also enjoyed traveling and spent twelve winters in Mesa, Arizona.
Margaret died on Sunday, August 31, 2014 at Peaceful Bliss Assisted Living in Alexandria at the age of 94. She is survived by sister, Mary Buch of Delano; many nieces and nephews; special caregivers, Ken and Jan Esala of Garfield. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Wilmot and Annie Douglas; husband, Oscar; and brothers, David and Donald Douglas.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at First Lutheran Church in Alexandria with Reverend Kari van Wakeren officiating. Interment will be held at Kinkead Cemetery in Alexandria.
