Margie Sherstad

December 9, 1929 — December 6, 2018

Alexandria

Margie Florella Sherstad died December 6, 2018, at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria, MN at the age of 88 years. Margie was the third of nine children born to Julius and Grace (Harstad) Gilbertson of Rendsville Township, Stevens County MN. Margie was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Margie had many happy memories of growing up on the family farm, from helping with chores to playing with her siblings. A country one-room schoolhouse was where she and her older siblings attended elementary school. She graduated from Morris High School in 1947. After high school, Margie was called to nursing, graduating from Lutheran Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis, MN in 1951. Her first RN position was at the newly built Stevens County Hospital in Morris, MN. Over a 35 year nursing career, Margie’s kindness and skilled nursing care touched many lives in Stevens County.

Returning to Morris after nursing school, Margie met and fell in love with Emmett Sherstad. They married on October 4, 1952. Early in their marriage they farmed in rural Donnelly, MN.  Margie and Emmett had four children: Jodi, Steven (Skip), Kristin, and Sheila. In 1963, the family moved to Morris, MN where they lived until 1992, moving to Glenwood where they enjoyed the small, active lakeside community. For over 10 years they were blessed to have been snowbirds in Mesa AZ, escaping the cold MN winters. After Emmett’s death in 2006, Margie made her home in Alexandria, MN to be close to family and friends.

Margie was a faithful servant to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Throughout her youth and adult years she was active in her church and local Christian women’s groups. Daily devotions were an integral part of her life.  Margie enjoyed spending time with her family, home improvement projects, scrapbooking, and baking. She made the best apple pie. Many were blessed with her thoughtful and newsy cards and letters. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.

Margie is survived by her three daughters, Jodi & Don Jordon of New London, Kristin & Bob Willert of Alexandria, and Sheila & Peter Postiglione of Loveland, CO; seven grandchildren, Olivia, Anne, Amy, Ashley, Vincent, Gina, and Stuart; four great-grandchildren, Violet, Bram, Elliot, and Clara; four sisters and three brothers. Margie was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Barbara; husband, Emmett; and son, Skip. Cremation has been conducted. A celebration of Margie’s life will be held in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army and The Gideons.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 8, 2019, at Restoration Church in Glenwood.  Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.  Interment will be at Summit Cemetery in Morris.
