Marilyn Ann Bratvold was born November 13, 1931 in Fergus Falls, MN, the daughter of Tom and Rachel (Melby) Bratvold. She grew up on the family farm near Ashby, MN and graduated from high school at Ashby. Marilyn was united in marriage to Don Asleson. She was blessed with four children, Gary, Thomas, Cheryl and Gail. Marilyn worked as a cook for various restaurants before becoming a cook at Douglas County Hospital. While working at the hospital Marilyn attended the Nursing Program at Alexandria Technical College. She became an LPN and worked at Douglas County Hospital on the surgical floor for about ten years. Marilyn retired from nursing due to a disability. She returned to cooking working at the Downtown Diner and the VFW Post 936. She also worked as a cook during the annual Dalton Threshing Show. Marilyn loved cooking and was a great cook. On April 23, 1983 Marilyn was united in marriage to Verlyn ?Bud? Phipps. The couple made their home in Alexandria. Marilyn enjoyed doing all kinds of craftwork. She liked to spend time gardening flowers and vegetables. She canned much of the produce her and Bud grew. Marilyn was a longtime member of the Eagles and the VFW Post 936 Auxiliary. On Saturday, July 5, 2008 Marilyn died at the age of seventy-six years. She was preceded in death by her two daughters, Cheryl Holte and Gail Jennisen; and one brother, Kenneth Bratvold. Marilyn is survived by her husband, Bud Phipps of Alexandria; two sons, Gary Asleson and wife, Pat) of California and Thomas Asleson and wife, Ethel, of Fergus Falls; one step-son, Kevin Phipps and wife, Diane, of Kilkenny, MN; one step-daughter, Lea Krueger and husband, Mike, of West Concord, MN; fifteen grandchildren; and eighteen great grandchildren. A funeral service was held Thursday, July 10, 2008 at the Kvam Free Lutheran Church near Ashby. Rev. Steve Carlson officiated. Music was provided by Margaret Ford and Richard & Darlene Akerman. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Casket bearers included Jeff Asleson, Joe Bratvold, Justin Knutson, Mark Bratvold, Don Breger and Mike Kruger. Honorary casket bearers included the members of VFW Post 936 Auxiliary. Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria, MN.
