Marion Johansen

Marion Estelle Mahady was born May 18, 1928 in Minneapolis, MN, the daughter of Raymond and Estelle (Cullen) Mahady. Marion grew up and attended school in Minneapolis. She graduated from South high School in 1947. Marion began work as a telephone operator from AT&T. On November 4 1950 Marion was united in marriage to Roy Johansen. The couple made their home in south Minneapolis where they were blessed with six children. Marion later worked as a telephone operator for Fairview Hospital and St. Mary?s Hospital. She also helped Roy with the bookkeeping for Roy?s Cleaning Service. Marion retired in 1988. The following year Roy retired and the couple moved to Alexandria, MN where they had spent several summers camping and vacationing. Marion enjoyed camping and spending time out doors. She liked to go for long walks, enjoying the outdoors and keeping fit at the same time. Her and Roy liked to travel throughout the United States. They also traveled in Canada, Norway and the Caribbean. Marion also enjoyed time spent sewing, quilting and crocheting. Volunteering was important to Marion. She volunteered much of her time to the Alexandria Senior Center where she was named Volunteer of the Year. Marion was also active in the Daughters of Isabella through St. Mary?s Church. On Friday, April 3, 2009 Marion died at the age of eighty years. Her parents and one infant son, Bradley, preceded her in death. Marion is survived by her husband, Roy of Alexandria; sons, Barry Johansen and wife, Martha, of Red Wing, MN, and George Johansen of Minneapolis; daughters, Nancy Wester and husband, Brian, of Eagan, MN, Karan Hillberg and husband, Mike, of Eagan, and Katherine Haagenson and husband, Carl, of Blaine, MN; and six grandchildren, Jacob Hillberg, Erin Wester, Heidi Haagenson, Kristen Hillberg, Elizabeth Haagenson and Lauren Wester. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 PM Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at St. Mary?s Church in Alexandria. Father Steve Binsfeld and Father Al Ludwig will be the celebrants. Entombment will follow in the church cemetery. Casket bearers include Brian Wester, Barry Johansen, George Johansen, Jacob Hillberg, Carl Haagenson and Mike Hillberg. Visitation will be from 5 to7 PM Monday with a prayer service at 6 PM followed by a Daughters of Isabella Rosary at Anderson Funeral Home. Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
