Marlyn Evangeline Bartholomew was born March 1, 1926 on the family farm in Wilken County, near Wolverton, MN, the daughter of Alfred and Lydia (Schoeneck) Prieb. At the age of one year she and her mother moved to the Schoeneck farm in Leaf Valley Township north of Garfield, MN. Life was hard for Marlyn and Lydia; they lived in a small house with Lydia?s parents and three uncles. She had to walk to country school and her religious lessons. However she did finish the eighth grade in only seven years. In 1943 Marlyn graduated from Central High School in Alexandria. While in high school she and Les Bartholomew became sweethearts. While Les went off to serve his country during the war Marlyn moved to Minneapolis where she worked for Sears-Roebuck. In 1945 Les returned from overseas duty in the US Navy and was sent to advanced training in Chicago. IL. Marlyn joined him in Chicago where they were united in marriage on June 16, 1945. The couple lived there until the war ended. Les was discharged in October 1945 and the couple returned to Minnesota. They lived in Minneapolis for about one year. When Marlyn was expecting their first child they decided it was time to return to the Alexandria area. A baby girl, Sharon, was born January 14, 1947. A second child, Mark, was born October 7, 1954 and a third child, Murray, was born June 13, 1957. While raising her children, Marlyn worked at various bookkeeping and office jobs. During these years she was also active in her church. She taught Sunday school, was Chairwoman of the Altar Guild and participated in Women?s Missionary league. She was an honorary member of the Zion Lutheran Ladies Aid. Marlyn was also active in Girl Scouts. She was the first manager of the JC Penney catalog office in Alexandria. Marlyn enjoyed country music, especially Charlie Pride. She loved to listen to and watch baseball and football games and was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins Marlyn survived breast cancer and strokes over the past twenty years among other health problems. On Monday, December 10, 2012 She died at the age of eighty-six years. Her mother, Lydia Prieb; sister, Maurine Moske; and two half-brothers preceded Marlyn in death. She is survived by her husband of sixty-seven years, Les Bartholomew, of Alexandria; one daughter, Sharon Trushenski and husband, Scott, of Spring, TX; two sons, Mark Bartholomew of Alexandria and Murray Bartholomew and wife, Deborah, of Anchorage, AK; four grandchildren, Todd Trushenski and wife, Pam, Ryan Trushenski and wife, Julie, Chad Bartholomew and Marcie Kluver and husband, Scott; and nine great grandchildren, Adam, Anna, Jordon, Emily, Madison, John, Kaitlyn, Emma and Blake. A funeral service was held Saturday, December 15, 2012 at Zion Lutheran Church. Reverend William Moeller and Reverend Terry Finnern officiated. Pam Anderson and Mertice Brueske provided music. Interment followed in the Geneva Cemetery. Casket bearers included Sharon Trushenski, Mark Bartholomew, Murray Bartholomew, Todd Trushenski, Ryan Trushenski, Chad Bartholomew and Marcie Kluver. Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
