Marlys Jean Crandall was born May 2, 1942 in Graceville, MN, the daughter of Edwin and Grace (Itzen) Crandall, Sr. Marlys grew up in Herman, MN where she graduated from Herman High School. At age eighteen Marlys began work as the Traverse County Treasurer.
On June 11, 1960 Marlys was united in marriage to Jerry Schoenrock at the Eden Reform Church in Herman. The couple moved to Maple Grove, MN where they made their home for fifteen years. They were blessed with three children, Lori, Tammy and Rick. Marlys worked as a city administrator for Maple Grove for four years.
In 1977 Marlys and Jerry moved their family to Alexandria, MN to be closer to relatives. She worked for United Telephone and later, for Cellular 2000, until 1998. After that she spent much of her time caring for her husband. Following Jerry's death in 2005 Marlys lived with family.
Marlys was an excellent baker and cook. She was often referred to as Betty Crocker. She loved making unique birthday cakes for her children and grandchildren. She sewed clothing for her daughters and also made doll clothes. Marlys took many trips with Jerry and family to visit Las Vegas. She enjoyed decorating projects and influenced her children to decorate their homes. She also loved to watch movies, especially comedies. Marlys loved to laugh and loved to make others laugh.
Marlys was a devoted Christian; being active and participating in her church community was important to her. She inspired her love of the Lord Jesus Christ in her children as they grew up involved in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.
On Sunday February 26, 2017 Marlys went home to the Lord at the age of seventy-four years. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Jerry. Marlys is survived by her children, Lori Schoenrock of Starbuck, MN, Tammy Schoenrock-Neilson and husband, Mark, of Medina, MN and Rick Schoenrock and wife, Brenda, of Alexandria; grandchildren, Shane Dewald, Nathan Dewald, Landon Dewald, Cameron Dewald and Tyler Schoenrock; sisters, Jeanette Eversole of Hacienda Heights, CA and Sharon Johnson Stavrovich of Plymouth, MN; brother, Edwin Crandall, Jr. and wife, Kathy, of Herman; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 10 AM Friday, March 3, 2017 with a visitation beginning at 9 AM, at the New Life Christian Church in Alexandria. Interment will follow in the Lakeside Cemetery at Herman. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 PM Thursday, March 2, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
