Martha was born May 9, 1921 on a farm near Brandon, Minnesota to Finnish Immigrants, Hilda and Andrew Hulkonen. She was one of eight children and spent her early life on the farm. At age twenty- four, she moved to Minneapolis and worked until she retired in 1986.
Martha had a deep faith and believed in Resurrection and Eternal life granted by Jesus Christ. She read the Bible daily and had evening devotion every night before she went to bed.
As a child, she and Cliff Fredrickson (her husband) knew each other. The farms on which they grew up were close together. Martha went to school in District 70 in Urness Township and Clifford went to school in Moe township. They were born just a few weeks apart in the same year. They met again in the Twin Cities in 1969 and were married on Valentine's Day in 1970 at Hope Lutheran Church by Pastor Carlson. Attendants were Lola Fredrickson and William Jarvi.
Martha and Cliff really enjoyed their life together—especially their many trips. Martha said, "We did a lot of traveling together—twice we went to Sweden and also visited Norway, Finland and Russia. I also made a trip to Sweden in 1971 with Cliff's Dad, Carl." They traveled to Canada, Hawaii, Nevada and the Dakotas. Many of their trips were with Cliff's relatives from Sweden.
Martha enjoyed her trips to Finland, Sweden and Walleye fishing trips to Canada.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Fredrickson; her brothers John Hulkonen (Ventila), Toivo Hulkonen (Ellen; sisters Eva Stolts (John), Lillian and Vieno Hulkonen; nephew Charles Hulkonen and niece Debbie Okerlund. Martha is survived by sisters, Anna Chapman and Elsie Okerlund; step -daughter Lola Fredrickson (William), and many nieces, nephews as well as great and great-great nieces and nephews.
