Martin Theodore Haar was born September 10, 1919, the son of Theodore and Adella (Schamber) Haar in Freeman, South Dakota. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul?s Lutheran Church in Freeman, attended and graduated from the parochial school, local high school and Freeman Junior College. He commenced his banking career in August 1938 and banking has been his lifetime profession with the exception of three and one half years of service during World War II, serving overseas for two and a half years in the U.S. Coast Guard in the Pacific Theater. To further his education he graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Banking. He also attended college courses in Aberdeen, South Dakota and Harvard University. He was married to Marion Schempp on May 29, 1944 while home on leave from overseas duty. They lived in Chicago, Freeman and Aberdeen prior to moving to Alexandria in 1966 when he became president of the now, Bremer Bank, until his retirement on March 31, 1984. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. During his banking career he was active in banking and community organizations in South Dakota, Minnesota and Alexandria. Martin died on July 16, 2013 at the age of 93. Martin is survived by his two children: Cathryn Haar and Theodore and wife, Brenda Haar all of Alexandria; and three grandchildren: Amanda, Ryan and Allison. He was preceded in death by his wife Marion; baby sister; and four brothers. A funeral service was held on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at Zion Lutheran Church with Rev. David Hinz officiating. Music was provided by Mertice Brueske and Dan Olson Interment was in Kinkead Cemetery. Casket Bearers included Robert Haar, Al Haar, Jim Koosman, Jay Hoover, Richard Kaempflein, and Gordy Billmark. Honorary Casket Bearers were Andrew Koosman, Aly Koosman, Zach Koosman, Kayla Hoover, Lexi Hoover, Mitchell Hoover, and Mitchell Hoover.
