Martin "Marty" C. Slaamot was born on April 2, 1945 in Williston, North Dakota to Arnold and Karen (Kingstad) Slaamot. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. Marty grew up on the family farm in Hanks, North Dakota. He served his country in the Army National Guard for six years and was honorably discharged in 1969.
Marty was united in marriage to Ruth Kastelle on August 16, 1968 in Whitefish, MT by Reverend Jack Trosen. To this union the couple was blessed with five children, Bonnie, Michelle, Charlene, Robert and Tony. The family lived in Williston, ND where Marty worked on the oil fields and as an auto mechanic. In August of 1989, Marty and Ruth moved to Alexandria, MN where he attended Alexandria Technical College for Automotive Diagnostic Technician. After completing his two year degree he went to work for Koeps Corner in Alexandria. In 1993, Marty started working at 3M as a machine operator and just retired in April of 2016.
Marty had a love of tractors but only if it was a John Deere. He loved riding his tractor, so his grass got a lot of attention and it was not uncommon for his grass to get cut 3 times a week.
Marty died on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria at the age of 71. He is survived by his wife, Ruth of Alexandria; daughters, Bonnie (Tom) Fretland of Williston, ND and Charlene (John) Williams of Chaska, MN; sons, Robert (Dawn) Slaamot of Osakis, MN and Tony Slaamot of Alexandria, MN; grandchildren, Tyler and Brianna Fretland, Jenna, Dominic and Braden Williams, Corbin and Callie Slaamot, and Molly Betterman; brothers, Steve (Karen) Slaamot of Harvey, ND and Irv Slaamot of Sisseton, SD; sisters, Arleen (Dave) Finders of Williston, ND and Kori (Rob) Williams of Andover, MN; mother-in-law, Ettie Kastelle of Kalispell, MT; sister-in-law, Mona Slaamot of Chula Vista, CA; and many nieces and nephews. Marty is preceded in death by his daughter, Michelle; parents; and his brother, Arnold Jr.
Funeral Service will be held 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria. Visitation will be held from 4-7 PM with a Prayer Service at 7 PM on Friday, October 14, 2016 at the Anderson Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
