Marvin Phillip Iverson was born on January 14, 1942, the youngest of three children to Henry and Minnie (Benson) Iverson in Glenwood, Minnesota, and was baptized at Glenwood Lutheran Church. He grew up on his parent’s farm on the shores of Pelican Lake. Marvin attended country school District 33 through 5th grade and continued his schooling in Glenwood through the 10th grade until he was needed to help his father farm. In October of 1960, Marvin enlisted in the Minnesota National Guard and served honorably until 1967. During this time, he kept busy helping on local farms, driving a milk truck route, working at the DNR fisheries, driving a dump truck in metro area, and working at Forbord Oil as a gas attendant.
Marvin was united in marriage to Darlene Toutge on July 22, 1967, at the Kerkhoven Lutheran Church in Kerkhoven. The couple made their home in Glenwood where they lived with his son, Jerome. Marvin wanted to finish his schooling and earned his GED in 1972. He later worked at Glenwood Lutheran Church as custodian until they decided to move to Benson. Marv started carpentry work in Benson working with a couple different contractors, then became self-employed in 1984. He enjoyed home remodeling and smaller fix it jobs. Marv also had a lawn and snow removal business and enjoyed driving his John Deere tractor taking care of people’s yards. He took great pride in all he did and enjoyed helping people. In 2011, Marv retired from carpentry and focused more on lawn and snow removal. At this time, Darlene started helping him with the lawns and snow, and they became a team until last Fall due to Marv’s growing health concerns.
Marv was active in the Benson American Legion being their treasurer for many years and enjoyed participating in Memorial Day Parades. He was a member at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church and served as usher and bellringer. Marv had a passion for music, playing the accordion and piano. He shared his gift of music with nursing home residents and played at barn dances. He enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling, woodworking, mowing, playing cards, watching the Price is Right and Wheel of Fortune. Most importantly, he loved being with family and friends, and especially attending his grandchildren’s events.
Marvin died on Saturday, December 21, 2019, at the St. Cloud Hospital at the age of 77. He is survived by his wife, Darlene of Benson; sons, Jerome Iverson of East Grand Forks, MN, Alan (fiancé, Stacey Lhotka) Iverson of Alexandria; Nathan (Jessica) Iverson of Paynesville; 6 grandchildren, Zachary, Brayden, Trent, Josiah, Jameson, Jada, and baby girl expected early in January; brother-in-law, Darrell (Dorothy) Toutge of DeGraff; and sister-in-law, Carol Toutge of Willmar; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Marvin is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Minnie; brother, Harlan; and sister, Elaine Hildebrandt; and daughter-in-law, Lynn Iverson.
A Funeral Service will be held 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 28, 2019, at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson. Visitation will be held from 5-7 PM on Friday, December 27, 2019, at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church and for one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Interment will be held at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Benson.
