Mary Rae (Chan) Wood was born in Alexandria on August 20, 1931, where she lived until she was married. She attended The College of St. Teresa, in Winona, and earned a degree in teaching. She met her future husband while at college and married Dick M Wood on July 31, 1954, in Alexandria. Together they raised seven children while moving many times and to various states because of Dick’s job. The Wood family came to vacation in Alexandria many summers to see Mary’s family and friends.
Wherever they lived Mary was active in the local Catholic church and school, as well as being involved in many community clubs, Girl Scouts and being a volunteer at a local hospital. She enjoyed women’s bowling and playing bridge.
Mary Rae died from Alzheimer's disease peacefully in Peoria, Arizona on April 6, 2023.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Dick M. Wood, her twin brothers James F Chan and J Robert Chan, sister-in-law Bonnie Chan, and her parents Robert F. Chan and Esther Chan.
She is survived by her loving family of seven children, twenty grandchildren, and eighteen great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations, in Mary’s name, to the Alzheimer’s Association.
