Mary V. Haaland age 85 of Alexandria formerly of Minneapolis died on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at Knute Nelson. A Funeral Service will be held 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
Mary Virginia (Murphy) Haaland was born January 6, 1930 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Floyd and Virginia (Haviland) Murphy. She graduated from Academy of Holy Angels in Minneapolis. Mary attended nursing school in Breckenridge, Minnesota.
Mary was united in marriage to Martin Haaland on July 22, 1949 in Minneapolis. The couple lived in Minneapolis and was blessed with three children, Virginia, Eugene, and Janet. She was a homemaker while the children were young and when they became school aged she back to work. She found a career in data processing working for Hennepin County and Control Data. Mary and Martin retired in 1982 and moved to Parkers Prairie on Lake Vermont where they built a home themselves. They moved to Alexandria in 1997.
Mary loved volunteering at the Douglas County Hospital, Knute Nelson in the Coffee Shop and at Bethesda Lutheran Church. She loved her family and being involved with her grandchildren and even water-skiing with them.
Mary died on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at Knute Nelson at the age of 85. She is survived by her husband, Martin; children, Gene (Sue) Haaland of Zimmerman and Janet Haaland of Minneapolis; grandchildren, Troy (Kerry) Nelson, Andrea Nelson, Chad (Amanda) Nelson, and Brandon Nelson; great-grandchildren, Lilly, Quinn and Ali; brother, Denny (Marilyn) Murphy of Plymouth; sister, Patricia Adams of Coon Rapids; and many nieces and nephews. Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Virginia; daughter, Virginia Haaland; and sister, Lorraine Olson.
A funeral service was held on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at Bethesda Lutheran Church with Reverend Jerry Lanes officiating. Interment was in Kinkead Cemetery in Alexandria.
