Mary Sether

Mary Ellen “Tuney” Sether of Alexandria passed away on March 7, 2018. Mary was born on February 2, 1942 to Francis James and Mary Evelyn (Larcom) Brennan. She was raised in Beverly, Massachusetts. After graduating from Beverly High School in 1960, Mary went to work as a secretary until moving to Anaheim, California in 1965.

Mary met her husband, Gerald “Jerry” Sether in California when he rode a horse up to her apartment building, saw her in her bikini, picked her up and threw her on the horse. They were united in marriage on March 8, 1967 in Santa Ana, California.  Their first child, Brian, was born in California before they moved to Minnesota in 1970.

Mary and her family lived in the twin cities for 10 years prior to moving to Alexandria, MN, where they lived for 35 years. Mary worked at the Douglas County Courthouse from 1989 until her retirement in January of 2005. She enjoyed cross word puzzles, word games, and the outdoors as well as the many pets they had over the years. Mary especially enjoyed teaching Sunday School, participating in Bible Study, and being an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Jerry, less than two weeks before her passing.  They were able to celebrate their 51st wedding anniversary in heaven on March 8th. Mary was also preceded in death by an infant son, and her son Brian, her parents, her sister Claire, and brothers: David, James, and Edward.

Mary is survived by her son, Stephen (Jenny) Sether of Pine River, MN and her daughter, Stephanie (Mike) DeRuyck of Afton, MN, as well as two grandsons, Finn Sether and Oliver DeRuyck ,  her sister Eleanor (Rodney) Boyd, sister-in-law Marge Erickson, brother-in-law Orville (Marianne) Sether and several special nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on April 7th, 2018 at 2pm at Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria, MN, with visitation one hour prior. Burial will be at Kinkead Cemetery.   Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home. www.andersonfuneral.net
