Maynard Alsleben

Maynard E. Alsleben was born June 18, 1921 in Glencoe, MN the son of Albert and Emma Alsleben. He grew up in Glencoe where he graduated from high school. Maynard continued his education at the University of Minnesota and the Minneapolis School of Art where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1945 Maynard joined the United States Army. During World War II he served in India. After four years of service he was discharged and moved to Bismarck, ND where he took a job with Bismarck Publishing. While in Bismarck he met Betty Wallner. On November 9, 1952 he and Betty were united in marriage. Maynard was immediately blessed with a step-son, Corwin. The family made their home in St. Paul, MN. Three years later they were blessed with a daughter, Kim. Maynard worked for the St. Paul Dispatch for a few years before taking a job with Brown & Bigelow. He worked for many years at Brown & Bigelow as a commercial artist. Maynard retired in 1986. For several years Maynard came to the Alexandria area in the summer to enjoy fishing. He and Betty eventually bought a home on Maple Lake and enjoyed lake living for many years. Maynard and Betty also wintered in Texas for several years. Later they moved to the Voyagers townhomes in Alexandria. Most recently Maynard has been a resident at Peaceful Bliss Assisted Living in Alexandria. Maynard appreciated the outdoors. He enjoyed traveling and camping. Maynard was a fan of our National Park System and visited nearly every national park. Yellowstone National Park was Maynard?s favorite park. He also appreciated birds; he enjoyed watching and feeding them. He also loved growing flowers in his garden. Maynard was an artist at heart. He worked as an artist but also spent time at home painting scenes from his travels and doing photography. Maynard was a volunteer. He was active in his churches; St Matthews Lutheran Church in St. Paul and Calvary Lutheran Church in Alexandria. He was active in the Elks Club in St. Paul where he had served as the Exalted Ruler. He was also a Shriner and supported the Shriner?s Hospital for children in St. Paul. On Saturday, May 24, 2014 Maynard died at the age of ninety-two years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Alsleben; three bothers, Martin Steseman, Herbert Streseman, and Ellsworth Alsleben; and one sister, Evelyn Rosebrock. Maynard is survived by his son, Corwin Wallner and wife, Lucy, of Branson, MO; his daughter, Kim Fechner and husband, Sean, of Minnetonka; grandchildren, Michele Powell and husband, Michael of Rochester, MN and Charlena Lewis of Kenyon, MN; and three great grandchildren, MacKenzie Davis, Delaney Lewis and Evan Lewis.; and one sister, Mildred Jowsey of Portland, OR. A funeral service was held Friday, May 30, 2014 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Reverend Mike Widner officiated. Interment followed in the Kinkead Cemetery. Military honors were accorded by the American Legion Post 87, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 936, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 235 and the Minnesota National Guard. Arrangements were with the Anderson funeral Home.
