Nola Pearl Newhouse was born on February 24, 1920 in Fergus Falls, MN to Oscar and Nina (Diekow) Newhouse. She graduated from Brandon High School in 1938. Nola was united in marriage to Norman Foslien on October 5, 1940 at Grace Lutheran Church in Brandon, MN. The couple lived in Alexandria for a short time and then moved to rural Garfield where they farmed until 1958. Nola was active in the Farmers Union and sold Insurance for them during the 1950?s. In 1955, Norman and Nola opened Nola?s Ark and Resort on Lobster Lake, which they owned and operated for 17 years. In the late 1960?s Nola did bookkeeping for a couple years at Bethany Home in Alexandria. Nola was active in church, being a Sunday School Teacher and in Ladies Aid. Nola had a love for music, she self taught herself how to play the piano and enjoyed playing the organ, she also liked to play the psalmodikon, which she played for the Alexandria Museum?s Bicentennial Celebration in 1976. She also enjoyed writing; she wrote autobiographies, a book, poetry and made birthday cards. She even wrote a play, which was performed at the Brandon Auditorium. Nola enjoyed needlework, quilting, crazy quilting and going to craft fairs. Nola and Norman also enjoyed traveling; one of their favorite trips was going to Hawaii. Nola died on Saturday, October 3, 2009 at Bethany Home in Alexandria, MN at the age of 89. She is survived by her daughter, LuWanna Hintermeister of Carlos; grandchildren, Kent (Brenda) Hintermeister of Brandon, Dena Hintermeister of Garfield, and Jason (Tammy) Hintermeister of Garfield; great-grandchildren, Trent, Hanna, Levi, Zachary, and Jacob; sisters-in-law, Louella Myhr of Alexandria and Fyllis Flanery of Minneapolis; and brother-in-law, Frank Foslien II of Alexandria; and many nieces and nephews. Nola is preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Nina; and husband, Norman. A memorial service was held on Thursday, October 8, 2009 at West Moe Lutheran Church in Moe Township, Minnesota with Reverend Don Clifford officiating and organist, Diane Alveshere. Inurnment was in West Moe Lutheran Cemetery. Honorary Urn Bearers were Dennis Karger, Wallace Quitmeyer, Dean Plaster and Darold Plaster. Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
