Olive Ann Hagstrom was born April 22, 1928 in Lowry, MN, the daughter of Clarence and Mae (Femrite) Hagstrom. She attended school in Lowry and graduated from Glenwood High School. Olive attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN where she graduated with a degree in home economics. In 1950 she began teaching in Madelia, MN In 1952 Olive moved to Marshall, MN where she taught at Marshal Junior High. Over her teaching career she completed post-graduate studies at several universities in North Dakota, Colorado and California. In 1956 Olive moved to Fort Morgan, CO and taught at the high school until 1963. For the next ten years she lived in Anaheim, CA and taught school at Brookhurst Junior High.
From 1961 to 1973 Olive would return to her family in Minnesota each summer. She was a co-owner of Hagstrom's Resort on Lobster Lake near Alexandria, MN. Olive worked with her brother, John, helping to run the business and providing families with satisfying vacations. Olive and John sold the resort in 1990.
Olive's faith was very important to her. She served her church on the Church Council and was president of WELCA. She volunteered to teach Release Time and was active in the First Lutheran Prayer Chain; she was always willing to volunteer her time wherever she was needed. Olive also volunteered as treasurer of the Knute Nelson Women's Auxiliary.
Olive was a strong and confident woman. She loved visiting with people and could put people at ease and brighten their day with her sense of humor. Hospitality was her trademark and her coffee pot and cookies were her tools.
On Thursday, December 22, 2016 Olive died at the age of eighty-eight years. She is preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Allen Hagstrom. Olive is survived by her brother, John Hagstrom of Alexandria; one sister-in-law, Eleanor Hagstrom of Alexandria; nephews, Timothy Hagstrom and wife, Rita and Mark Hagstrom; niece, Elizabeth Hagstrom and wife, Elizabeth Skalnek, great nieces and nephews, Grant Hagstrom, Rachel Schmidt and husband, Brian, Ingrid Hagstrom, Austin Hagstrom and Zachary Hagstrom-Skalnek; and several beloved cousins and friends.
A funeral service will be held 11 AM Thursday, December 29, 2016 at First Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Interment will follow in the White Garden Cemetery near Alexandria. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 AM Thursday at the church. Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to First Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice.
