Paul James Lauthen was born April 21, 1947 in Fergus Falls, MN, the son of James and Mary (Peterson) Lauthen. He was baptized and confirmed at East Moe Lutheran Church of Garfield, MN. Paul grew up on a dairy farm. Following his graduation from Brandon High School Paul attended two years of college at Fergus Falls and two years at Moorhead State University. He graduated with a degree in Health and Physical Education.
Paul served in the United States Army for two years. While on leave he was united in marriage to Margaret Thronson at Erdahl Lutheran Church on November 6, 1971. Paul returned to active duty as a Military Policeman at Camp Zama, Japan. Margaret was able to join him, and the couple lived in Japan for two months before returning to the United States.
After Paul’s discharge from the army he began farming the Lauthen home farm near Brandon. Paul loved farming. It was his work and his hobby. He was enthusiastic about all aspects of farming; from raising grain to beef cattle. His work ethic was unmatched.
Paul enjoyed sports and was an avid fan of all Minnesota sports teams, especially basketball. Spending time with his grandchildren was important to Paul. He enjoyed watching Megan and Brian participate in sports, and giving combine rides to his grandchildren. “Papa” Paul lit up when visiting with Isaac on the phone. His loyal golden retriever, Bailey, will miss him dearly.
Paul enjoyed taking various trips with Margaret. He also looked forward to visiting with his cousins and time spent with his coffee buddies in Brandon.
Paul was very community minded. He served several terms as Township Supervisor and snowplow operator. He was active in the Brandon American Legion and the Brandon Lions Club. As a lifelong member of East Moe Lutheran Church, Paul served the congregation in whatever capacity was needed. He was currently serving as church secretary. Paul was very proud of his church.
On Saturday, November 22, 2014 Paul passed away at the age of sixty-seven years. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Joanne Marie. Paul is survived by his devoted wife, Margaret of Brandon; two sons, Tim Lauthen and wife, Kari, of Garfield and Peter Lauthen and wife, Amber, of Moorhead; and three grandchildren, Megan, Brian, and Isaac Lauthen.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at East Moe Lutheran Church. Pastor Sarah Evenson officiated. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Military honors were accorded by the American Legion Post 278 and the Minnesota National Guard.
