Pearl Kaufman

October 15, 1915 — April 20, 2010

Pearl M. Kaufman Pearl May Kaufman was born in Hill City, SD on October 15, 1915, the daughter of Walter and Lucinda (Stevens) Maudlin. She grew up in the Black Hills area and actually attended the dedication of Mount Rushmore by President Coolidge. After graduating Custer High School, she met and married George Kaufman in Rapid City SD on Dec. 1, 1934. Together they had two children, Jim and Barbara. She enjoyed raising her family and instilled in them the value of hard work and sportsmanship. She also enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and crafts. She was an incredibly talented leather craftsman and knitted beautifully. Pearl and her family moved to Alexandria in 1951, where the family owned and operated the Camp Welcome Resort on West Lake Cowdry. Pearl managed the resort and took care of all the cabins and guests. She loved meeting and visiting with the numerous vacation families through the years. Pearl moved into Alexandria in 1976 and spent the next several years volunteering for Red Cross, First Congregational Church, Meals on Wheels, and was a key motivator and worked tirelessly getting the Alexandria Senior Center to become a reality. She made many friends throughout the years with her wonderful contributions to the community. Pearl died on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at Knute Nelson at the age of 94 years old. She is survived by her son Jim Kaufman of Alexandria, grandchildren Lori Rehovsky of Alexandria: Dean Kaufman of Miltona: Linda Auran of Alexandria: Curt (Deb) Auran of Alexandria; 7 great grandchildren; sister Doris Brandt of Fargo, ND; and brother Harold Maudlin of Custer, SD. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband George Kaufman, daughter Barbara Bier, her brother Roy and her sister Edith. A memorial service was held on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria with Rev. Scott Keehn officiating. Inurnment will be in the Custer County Cemetery in Custer SD. Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home of Alexandria.
