Phillip Kangas

June 9, 1930 — October 23, 2017

Phillip Henry Kangas was born on June 9, 1930 in Lake Mary Township the son of Henry and Stella (Heikkinen) Kangas.  He grew up on a farm in Urness Township and attended Country School.

Phil was married to Nettie Eva Yoemans from 1953 to 1956. They had two children, Phillip “Skip” and Jeffery.

On June 5th, 1964 he was united in marriage to Rosella Josephson in Sisseton, South Dakota.  The couple farmed in Urness Township and to this union two daughters were born.

He also farmed with his brothers. Besides farming Phil and his brother, Marvin owned and operated an Implement dealership in Garfield, MN.  Phil was a talented salesman.  He also loved working on farm equipment and loved raising livestock.

Phil will be remembered as a hard working, intelligent man who loved to farm and when time would allow to sit around, have coffee and shoot the breeze.  He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, smelting and reading.  Phil will be missed for his quirky sense of humor and strength and compassion in times of hardship. He was the “rock” of the family and was the embodiment of SISU especially at the end of his life.

Phillip died on Monday, October 23, 2017.  He is survived by his wife, Rosie; son, Phillip “Skip” (Jeanne); daughters: Teresa (Danessa) Kangas, Laura (Brian) Wilson; five grandchildren; Tammy, Shelly, Kurt, Jack and Beck, six great grandchildren, brothers: Marvin (Dorothy), Jack (Josie); sisters: Lucille Elliott and Jean Root.

He was preceded in death by his infant sister Phyllis, parents, Henry and Stella, son, Jeffery, sister, Loretta Williams, brother, Clare and nephew Cory.

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 27, 2017 from 12:00 – 1:30 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home with a Memorial service to follow at 1:30 PM.  Private family burial will be at the Finnish Apostolic Cemetery in Moe Township.   Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home. www.andersonfuneral.net
