Richard Leen

b. April 6, 1936

Richard (Dick) Ellsworth Leen was born April 6, 1936 in rural New Effington, South Dakota. He was raised on a farm by his parents, Ellsworth and Florence, along with two brothers and a sister. He developed his strong work ethic at a very young age from working on the farm and attending West Point Military Academy. He worked for Unisys Corporation for his entire career, retiring as an executive after 43 years? service. Though he traveled the world, he was most content being at home with family. Dick married Marsha, the love of his life, on August 4, 1979. He continued his zest for life into retirement, enjoying his lifelong passion of cheering on the Minnesota Twins, while filling his days with golf, painting, woodworking, making stained glass, and most of all enjoying his time with family, friends, and neighbors. Dick most enjoyed spending time with his children and their families, particularly his grandchildren. His friends, spinning and racquetball partners, and his golf buddies were also so important to him. He had the gifted ability to find good in everyone and in every day. His faith helped him fight a courageous battle as he struggled with the effects of brain cancer for the past 2 years. Through it all Dick kept his dignity and his positive attitude and an ever-present smile on his face. He was the most humble, kind, and gentle man you will ever meet. He was truly the ultimate gentleman. He was a romantic at heart, but a heart nourished by an inner stillness. Dick will be remembered for his kindness, his gentle spirit, and the twinkle in his eye. He lived his life the same way he left this world, with dignity and with selflessness. Dick is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Robert, and his grandson Zachary. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 33 years, Marsha; daughter Marsha (Greg), son Richard (Kally), daughter Jane, son Dustin (Jennifer), daughter Marnie (Nick); grandchildren Josh, Haley, Katie, Areyon, and Alexandra; and siblings James, and Barbara (Robert). The family wishes to extend their gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Joon Uhm, Dr. Kendall Lee; and their outstanding teams at Mayo Clinic, Douglas County Hospital, the wonderful caring staff at Knute Nelson and the loving support of Hospice. The funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, December 7, with visitation one hour prior to the service at First Lutheran Church, 822 Douglas Street, Alexandria, MN 56308, (320) 762-2196.
