Robert Dean “Bob” Fagen was born on July 15, 1938, the son of Holmes and Lillie (Haugen) Fagen in Montevideo, Minnesota. He grew up on a farm near Granite Falls. He was baptized and confirmed at Wang Lutheran Church. He attended Granite Falls High School and was on the football team and was involved in FFA. Bob graduated from Granite Falls High School in 1956.
On October 18, 1958 Bob was united in marriage to Sandra Mae Tongen at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Montevideo. After their marriage the couple moved to the Twin Cities where Bob worked a few jobs and then bought a business in Canby which they called “Bob & Sandy’s Recreation”. The family moved to California for one year where he had a milk route and then back to Montevideo where they purchased a farm from 1965-1974. They bought the M&M Ballroom in Montevideo and then in 1977 they purchased Sun Valley Resort in Alexandria on Mill Lake. They got the Ballroom and resort back after selling them and ran each for awhile to help the new owners get established in the business.
