Robert Arthur Nelson was born at the original hospital in Alexandria on September 15, 1921, the son of Arthur and Ellen (Hogdin) Nelson. He grew up and went to school in Holmes City. Bob served his country as a sailor in the United States Navy during World War II, where he was stationed in Hawaii.
After being honorably discharged he worked as an MC at the Gang Planks, a roller skating rink where he met his wife, Aurolea. The couple got married on June 30, 1950 at the Congregational Church in Milbank, South Dakota. The couple settled in Alexandria where Bob worked as an electrician and sheet metal worker for 45 years.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church, Lions Club and rifle club. He had several hobbies which included: hunting, fishing, skating, square dancing, golfing, and woodworking.
Bob died on Wednesday, March 1, 2017. He is survived by his sons: Bruce of Minneapolis, Pat & wife, Leigh of Alexandria; son-in-law, Steve Bloom of Oregon; grandchildren: Benjamin (Sarah) Bloom, Molly Bloom (Sonny Mohammadzadeh), John (Aure'lie) Bloom, Austin "AJ" Nelson; great grandchildren: Diarmuid Halloran Bloom, Atticus Finch Mohammadzadeh, Riyaz Ira Bloom Mohammadzadeh, Paul Bloom and Adam Bloom; sister, Florence Mobley.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Aurolea; daughter, Becky; his parents; siblings: Dennis Nelson, Rose Wood, an infant brother.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, March 10, 2017, 11:00 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Alexandria. Burial at Kinkead Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home. www.andresonfuneral.net
