Robert Lee Petersen was born August 7, 1938 to Rev. William and Marie Beckman Petersen in York, Nebraska. He was the youngest of 9 sons. He was baptized and confirmed in the congregations his father served in York and Garland, Nebraska. He graduated from Concordia High School Seward, Nebraska; Concordia Jr. College in St. Paul, MN; Concordia Sr. College Fort Wayne, and Concordia Seminary St Louis, Missouri in 1965. He married Joan Bruss June 23, 1962.
He did his vicarage at Zion in Chicago, Ill and was Ordained at Bethany Lutheran in Austin, TX. Bob served Trinity Lutheran church in Borger, TX and Bethany Lutheran in Naperville, Ill. He accepted a call to Trinity Lutheran in Carlos, MN in 1977 and served there for 23 years. Bob also served vacancies in congregations in Douglas County for 37 years including Ebenezer in Leaf Valley, Good Shepherd in Alexandria, St. Johns in Villard, Trinity in Grove Lake, Trinity in Carlos, and concluding with St. Paul’s West Miltona.
Robert died October 21, 2014. Preceded in death by his parents, brothers William, Arthur, Ray, Erwin, Victor, and Paul.
Those surviving are his brothers Fred and Don (Yvonne), wife Joan, children and their spouses: Steven (Michelle), Philip (Tammy), Timothy (Shannon), and Elizabeth (Philip) and 8 grandchildren; Leah, Jordan, Kaitlyn, Todd, Benjamin, Peter, Nicholas, and Bethany and brother in law Gary Carlson and many nieces and nephews.
Bob and Joan purchased property on Maple Lake in 1978 where he employed his skills in carpentry as they built their home where they lived full time after he retired in 2000. They enjoyed traveling in Germany, Norway, and Sweden to the homes of their ancestors and to their family’s homes in CA, MT, CO, WI, and TX.
Bob met Joan when he got chicken pox. They shared many interests including reading, music, and fishing. He played football and basketball in High school. He was selected for all-state basketball in Nebraska. He was a fan of Cardinals, Cornhuskers, Twins, and Vikings. His internment will be at St. Luke’s Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery at Wood Lake, MN.
