Roger Steven Doty was born June 17, 1938 in Elgin, IL, the son of Denzil and Fern (Brockner) Doty. He grew up and attended school in Elgin. After graduating from Elgin High School, Roger worked on a survey crew for Illinois toll roads. Later he worked as a laborer painting water tanks. Roger went into a partnership on a bar in Nevada, MO. After selling out his half on the bar Roger then worked as a distributor for Budweiser. He moved back to Elgin and met Karen Diedrick. Roger and Karen were united in marriage on January 30, 1965. The couple was blessed with two children, Scott and Becky. The family moved to Sartell, MN in 1966, then to Garfield, MN in 1968. In 1970 they settled in Alexandria, MN. Roger was drawn to the Alexandria area by the hunting a fishing he enjoyed. For over nineteen years Roger worked as a custodian for school district 206. He retired from the district on October 3, 1997. Roger was an avid sportsman. He loved deer and pheasant hunting and loved spending time fishing in the summer and winter. For several years in the late 1980?s and early 90?s Roger owned and operated the Prairie Land Hunting Club near Sedan, MN. The hunting preserve was open to the public and Roger and his family raised the pheasant stock themselves. Roger taught his son, Scott, many hunting and fishing skills. He also loved his dogs, Dago, Brandy and Ginger. Roger also liked to spend time bowling. He bowled in leagues for many years. While in Nevada, MO he bowled a perfect game. On Sunday, April 13, 2014 Roger died at the age of seventy-five years. His parents and his fishing buddy, Ron Lade, preceded him in death. Roger is survived by his wife of forty-nine years, Karen Doty, of Alexandria; son, Scott Doty and wife, Michele, of Alexandria; daughter, Rebecca Petersen and husband, Randy, of Kensington, MN; grandchildren, Kaylee, Riley, Rachel, Bryce and Jeffrey; step-grandchildren, Kimberly and Kori; and step-great granddaughter, Aaliyah; and one sister, Kathy Doty of Alexandria. A funeral service will be held 11:30 AM Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Interment will follow in the Hudson Cemetery in Hudson Township. Bryce Doty will be the urn bearer. Honorary urn bearers are all of Roger?s grandchildren. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM Monday at the Anderson Funeral Home and also one hour prior to the service at church. Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home.
