Roger Lee Kovar was born December 4, 1942 in East Grand Forks, MN, the son of Joseph and Anna (Arnold) Kovar. He grew up in East Grand Forks where he graduated from Sacred Heart High School. Roger worked in East Grand Forks as the manager of the grain elevator until 1987. In 1977 Roger and his sister, Jeannie Braaten, bought the Morris Point Resort on Lake of the Woods near Baudette, MN. He operated the resort for the next twenty years of his life. ON April 30 1994 Roger was united in marriage to Anita Hugghins at St. Mary?s Church in Alexandria, MN. Roger and Anita made their home in Alexandria in 1996. Roger became the manager of Viking Lakes Village and managed the park for ten years. Roger also worked as a court appointed conservator/guardian for twenty-two people. Roger was a former member of the East Grand Forks Eagles Club. He participated in league bowling where he bowled for several teams. He enjoyed the outdoors; Roger liked to go deer hunting and fished in the summer and winter. He most enjoyed fishing in the winter. Roger also liked to play cards, enjoyed going to casinos and through Anita, became an avid Vikings fan. Roger enjoyed spending time with Anita and his family. Each Christmas they would make a point of heading out somewhere new and treating their family to a very special meal at a very nice restaurant. Roger also liked to bake Christmas treats, bars and bread. More recently Roger had added lefse making to his traditions. When it came to frying fish nobody was better than Roger. On Friday, December 11, 2009, following a battle with brain cancer, Roger died at the age of sixty-seven years. His parents; one brother, Ralph Kovar; and one sister-in-law, Donna Kovar, preceded him in death. Roger is survived by his wife, Anita of Alexandria; one step-daughter, Heather Hugghins of Minneapolis; one brother, Larry Kovar of Alexandria; one sister, Jeannie Braaten and husband, Dennis, of Crosby, MN; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and many friends. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at St. Mary?s Church in Alexandria. Rev. Fr. Steve Binsfeld was the celebrant. Interment will follow at a later date in the Lake Leven Cemetery at Villard, MN. Casket bearers included Stuart Kovar, Keith Kovar, Kevin Kovar, Tom Jacobson, Lennie Murray and Darrell Ridler. Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
