Roger Moore

Roger Leroy Moore died Saturday, September 3, 2011 at his home after a year-long battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 9, 2011 at the First Lutheran Church in Alexandria, Minnesota. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at church. Roger was born October 30, 1939 in Fort Madison, Iowa, to Chester and Georgia Moore. He graduated from Fort Madison High School in 1957and enlisted in the United States Navy. Roger spent eight years in the Navy where he spent time in the Mediterranean and was stationed in Antarctica before being honorably discharged in 1966. Looking for adventure and a new beginning, he moved to Fairbanks, Alaska. Roger was united in marriage to Connie Chowning on November 24,1967 in Fairbanks. The couple was blessed with one son, Logan. Roger and Connie made their home in Alaska for 40 years. In the 1970?s they purchased the Wildwood Mobile Home Park, which they owned and managed until 2006. They also ran a sand and gravel business, R&R Equipment during this time. In the 1980?s Roger was bitten by the gold bug and he spent the rest of his life mining claims in Alaska and the Yukon Territory with his business partner, Max Largeant. For many years Roger and Connie were active square and round dancers in the Fairbanks area where they formed many lasting friendships. In the mid-1990?s Roger and Connie took up the sport of curling. Roger became a true student of the game and an accomplished ice maker. The two of them participated and attended many curling bonspiels throughout the United States and Canada. Roger was a long-time member of the Fairbanks Curling Club. In 2007, Roger and Connie began to snowbird in Alexandria to be closer to their family, especially their grandchildren. While in Alexandria, Roger became an active member of the Vikingland Curling Club and participated in various exercise groups. He also enjoyed reading and meeting friends for coffee. Roger?s mild manner, intellect, curiosity, and honesty made him a friend of people from many walks of life. Roger was a pioneer, a patriot, and a free thinker who will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him. Roger is survived by his wife of 43 years, Connie; son Logan (Sarah); two beloved grandchildren, Evan and Ryan; brothers, Russell and Glenn; mother, Georgia; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Roger was preceded in death by his father, Chester, and his brother, Lloyd. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the charity of your choice in Roger?s name.
