Roger Odell Sundgaard was born August 6, 1933 in Pine City, MN, the son of Joseph and Nora (Struxness) Sundgaard. He grew up and attended school in Pine City. Roger joined the United States Army and served in the Korean War. Following his discharge he returned to Minnesota. On April 21, 1955 Roger was united in marriage to Betty Behrman. The couple was blessed with eleven children. They made their home in Bruno, MN where Roger worked at Wood Conversion. He continued as a farm hand working in Walnut Grove, Cyrus, Starbuck and Alexandria doing various jobs. In 1971 Roger settled in Nelson, MN where he spent the next thirty-eight years. Roger worked at Culligan in Alexandria, Alexandria Extrusion and was an independent over-the-road trucker. Following his retirement Roger continued to keep busy with odd jobs and volunteer work. He served as a caretaker at the Senator and was a senior companion driver. Roger was active in his church and various church groups. On Friday, July 18, 2014 Roger died at the age of eighty years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Sundgaard; his parents; and two granddaughters, Ivy and Dulcie Sundgaard. Roger is survived by his sons, David Sundgaard of Carlos, MN, Daniel Sundgaard and wife, Linda, of Idaho Falls, ID, Douglas Sundgaard of Carlos, Dwayne Sundgaard of Eagle Bend, MN, Donovan Sundgaard of Parkers Prairie, MN Chris Sundgaard of Alexandria, MN and Darren Sundgaard of Nelson; daughters, Debra Schuetzler and husband, Kurt, of Miltona, MN, Doreen Sundgaard of Bemidji, Delissa Williamson and husband, Stacey, of Appleton, MN and Dynelle Stewart and husband, David, of Albert Lea, MN; fourteen grandchildren; one great granddaughter, one brother, Donny Sundgaard of Little Falls; and one sister, Helen Ostlund and husband, Vernon, of Independence, MO. A funeral service will be held at 2 PM Saturday, July 26, 2014 at the House of Prayer in Alexandria. Reverend Lynndene Way and Brian Springer will officiate. Interment will follow in the Nelson Cemetery. Casket bearers include Calcie Sundgaard, Anthony Sundgaard, Troy Sundgaard, Seth Sundgaard, Ashley Stewart, Ashlyn Freitag, Courtney Stewart, Lindsey Stewart, Nicholas Sundgaard, Mitchell Sundgaard, Jayden Sundgaard, Morgan Williamson, Meagan Williamson and Lindsey Freitag. Military Honors were accorded by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 936, American Legion Post 87, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 235 and the Minnesota National Guard. Arrangements are with Anderson Funeral Home.
