Ronald Leonard Hoffman, son of Leonard and Gertrude (Schnitzler) Hoffman, was born May 18, 1948, in Morris, MN the second oldest of 10 siblings. He was baptized and received his First Communion in Holloway, MN and was Confirmed at Assumption Church in Morris. Ron graduated from Hancock High School in 1966. Ron then joined the Minnesota National Guard and attended Officer’s Training Academy in Minneapolis, MN graduating as a Second Lieutenant. He served in the Guard for 23 years retiring as a Major in 1989.
Ron was united in marriage to Virginia Behl on October 21, 1967. Together Ron and Ginny had two children. They made their home in Alexandria, MN when Ron accepted a position as a manager at Great Plains Lumber. Later, he became a partner at Garfield Lumber until he decided to start his own business, Ron Hoffman Construction LLC. He retired shortly after his diagnosis in 2016.
Ron was an active member of the church joining the Knights of Columbus in 1968 and serving for life. He also served on the Parish Council and the Cemetery Committee as well as several other boards in the Alexandria community. He was a board member of the Alexandria Opportunity Center, The Douglas County Agricultural Association, and was involved in the local DFL. Ron made friends everywhere he went and enjoyed serving the members of his community on these various boards and committees.
Ron courageously battled lung cancer for just over two years, passing peacefully at home on April 9th, 2018, surrounded by his family. He was 69 years old. Ron loved visiting and spending time with his friends and especially his grandchildren. He and Ginny traveled often to watch them in their various events and loved having the kids all visit them at their home.
Ron is survived by his wife, Ginny of Alexandria; two children: Michele (Ryan Harlicker) of Moorhead, MN, and Jeff Hoffman (fiancé, Jamie Laiho) of Centerville, MN; nine grandchildren: Matthew, Christopher (fiancé, Morgan Hansen), Alexander, & Nathan Harlicker of Moorhead, MN; Abigail & Aiden Hoffman, Hannah & Zach Laiho of Centerville, MN; eight siblings: Diane (Don) Fischer of Appleton, MN, Donna (Dwight) Quandt of Villard, MN, Marsha (Don) Timmerman of Osakis, MN, Sandra Riley of Sioux Falls, SD, Becky (Gene) Kotz of Blaine, MN, Dan (Dee) Hoffman of Morris, MN, Jerry (Colleen) Hoffman of Moorhead, MN, Wendy (Jim) Howe of St. Cloud, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard & Gertrude; his brother David, brother-in-law, Jack Behl; a niece and several nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 14, 2018, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alexandria. Visitation will be held from 4-7 PM on Friday, April 13, 2018, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 3:45 PM and Parish Prayers at 7 PM and the visitation continuing for one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
