ROSE M. ZAUCHE
Rose Myrta Zauche, the daughter of Ross and Sophie (Ouse) McCollor, was born on March 4, 1919 in Proctor, MN. She graduated from Proctor High School and then received a Bachelor’s degree from Duluth State Teachers College. After graduation from college, Rose began a long teaching career. She taught English in several Minnesota communities including Willmar, Rice Lake, Hermantown, and Cloquet. After moving to Alexandria in 1955, she taught at Jefferson High School and Central Junior High School. Thousands of Minnesotans have written and spoken well as a result of her training. She was most proud of a program that she developed in the last years of her career for junior high students with challenges in reading.
Rose met a young man in a café in Cloquet, MN and offered to sell him a ticket to a dance that her students were hosting. Thomas Zauche bought the ticket and their love grew from there. They were united in marriage on July 28, 1951 in Proctor, MN. They were blessed with two children, James and Anne.
Rose served faithfully at First Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday school and served as director of Vacation Bible School. She had a wonderful alto voice and sang in the church choir and with the Sweet Adelines. Some of her other interests included reading, canning the fruits and vegetables from Tom’s garden, and sewing. She was a talented seamstress and made many outfits for her children and granddaughters when they were young.
Rose had a passion for the outdoors. She enjoyed cross country skiing, hiking, and bird watching. She also enjoyed fishing for bass on Lake Latoka and walleyes on Lake of the Woods.
Tom and Rose were blessed with many close friends over the years. The Sunday evening coffees with friends on Lake Latoka were special occasions.
Rose loved her husband, children, and all of her grandchildren. Those who knew and loved her will forever miss her.
