Roy Bergquist

b. April 3, 1931

Roy Kenneth Bergquist was born April 3, 1931 in Alta, IA, the son of Carl and Tekla (Axelson) Bergquist. He was raised at Alta where he attended school. Following his graduation from high school at Alta, Roy enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. Roy served his country from 1948 until 1952. He was stationed in Korea and worked as a tank mechanic. After completing his tour of duty Roy returned to Alta where he was united in marriage to Darlene Fick. Shortly after their marriage Roy and Darlene moved to the Alexandria, MN area. Roy enjoyed fishing and wanted to live in the lakes area. The couple bought a farm in Carlos Township. Later they farmed in Belle River and in Hudson Township. They were blessed with two children, Timothy and Teresa. Roy began working for Philip Noonan at the Garden Center as a maintenance man. He continued working for the Garden Center after it was sold to Leroy Meyer. He was working for Charlie Meyer when Roy finally retired. Roy also participated in several bowling leagues. He worked and bowled at the same time; often returning to a game to see he was several frames behind. Roy enjoyed working at the bowling alley. He also liked to create bowling pin art out of old bowling pins. Roy was a former member of the Eagle?s Club and a supporter of the American Legion post and the VFW post. He supported Pheasants Forever by providing land for pheasant releases. In his early years he liked to hunt deer. Fishing in summer and winter was time well spent for Roy. He also enjoyed raising a large vegetable garden; he grew enough produce to feed the family and sell to local produce buyers. Roy raised cattle, chickens and swine on his farms. Roy also spent time on woodworking projects. On Saturday, November 17, 2012 Roy died at the age of eighty-one years. His wife, Darlene Bergquist; his parents; two brothers, Gordon and Eldon Bergquist; and one sister, Marion Sjoberg, preceded him in death. Roy is survived by his two children, Timothy Bergquist of Ramsey, MN and Teresa Morris of Alexandria; two grandsons, Jesse Morris and Joshua Morris; and on sister, Beverly Hinkeldey of Arnold?s Park, IA A funeral service will be held Monday, November 26, 2012 at the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria. Sarah Evenson will officiate and Kim Byrne will provide music. Interment in Hudson Cemetery will be at a later date. Jesse Morris and Joshua Morris are honorary pallbearers Visitation will be from 4 to 8 PM Sunday, November 25, 2012 at the funeral home. Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
