Russell Bennett Sund was born April 21, 1924, to Henry and Lilly Sund. He was baptized on June 1, 1924, and confirmed on June 5, 1938, in the Lutheran faith. His childhood was spent on a farm near Wendell, Minnesota. Russell served his country in the United States Army and was Honorably Discharged on August 17, 1946. After being discharged from the Army, Russell attended Hanson Auto Mechanic School in Fargo and was a volunteer firefighter in Fergus Falls. Upon completion of school, he was employed as a tractor mechanic and then a parts man for Minneapolis-Moline and later John Deere. He retired from John Deere in 1989.
On September 3, 1960, Russell was united in marriage to Gladys Lund. The couple resided in South Minneapolis after their marriage and to this union a daughter, Susan, was born. After retirement, the couple lived on Lake Osakis and in Alexandria.
He enjoyed being a member of the Sons of Norway and learning the Norwegian language. A highlight for him was taking a family trip to Norway in 1970.
Russell loved sweets and baking, whether it was making rolls or other goodies. Going for walks by the lake, fishing, and woodworking were some of his favorite pastimes. His granddaughters will remember his mischievousness as the "quarter fairy" that always left quarters under their dinner plates. He was a kind, quiet, generous and humble man who was always willing to help. He was very active in his church and faithfully studied the Bible.
Russell died on Sunday, October 2, 2016.
