Ruth Gylsen, age 81, of Alexandria, died Wednesday, February 18, 2015. A funeral service will be held 11 AM Monday, February 23, 2015 at the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria. Interment will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Holmes City. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 AM Monday at Anderson Funeral Home.
OBITUARY
Ruth Marion Fredriika Gylsen was born August 13, 1933 in Holmes City, MN, the daughter of Carl Emil and Elma (Heikkinen) Gylsen. Ruth was baptized on September 23, 1933 by Rev. Niemi and confirmed December 7, 1947 by Rev. Valberg at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Holmes City.
Ruth attended the Pocket Lake rural school and completed her schooling in Alexandria where she graduated from Central High School in 1952. Ruth moved to Wisconsin and worked as a nursing assistant at a retirement home in Hudson. Later she returned to the Alexandria area and worked at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital and Bethany Home. She also worked for ten years at Knute Nelson Memorial Home.
Ruth worked as a waitress at the Beanery in the Soo line Railroad depot in Glenwood and also at the Lakeside Ballroom. She worked as a clerk at Ben Franklin and worked for Ruhr American where she made clay pigeons.
Ruth served as an “in house” assistant for disabled people in Alexandria and worked at the Runestone Center. Ruth finished her work as a housekeeper at the Super 8 and AmericInn motels in Alexandria.
Ruth enjoyed spending time growing flowers in her garden and picking wild flowers. She liked to hunt and fish. Ruth was skilled at crocheting, canning, cooking and baking. She often created her own recipes.
On Wednesday, February 18, 2015 Ruth died at the age of eighty one years. She was preceded in death by her parents; and four brothers, Lawrence, Frank, Carl and Ruben Gylsen; great nephew, Robert Gylsen; and cousin, Donald Heikkinen. Ruth is survived by two sisters, Grace Iverson of Alexandria and Emily Wittwer of Champlin, MN; eleven nephews and nieces; and nine great nephews and nieces; and nine great great nephews and nieces.
A funeral service was held Monday, February 23, 2015 at the Anderson Funeral Home. Reverend Michael Peterson from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Moe Township was the officiant. Pastor Dane Werley Compton provided music. Interment followed in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Holmes City.
