Sammy VanBeek was born on March 19, 1931, in Inwood, Iowa the son of Jake and Francis (Bol) VanBeek. He grew up in Larchwood, Iowa where he attended country school. He farmed until September of 1953 when he served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in June of 1955. He continued to farm in Iowa after his service for a short time and then moved to Alexandria where he and his family purchased Sun Valley Resort on Mill Lake. Sammy, his parents and brother ran the resort until 1970 when they sold it.
Sammy was united in marriage to Marlys Severson at West Moe Church in 1957. After selling the resort Marlys and Sammy built a home with a couple of apartments they rented out. The couple enjoyed dancing and spending time with family and friends.
Sammy was a lifetime member of the Elks, Legion and Eagles. He was also active in the DAC.
Sammy died on Friday, January 10, 2020. He is survived by his sister, Florence Kroll and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marlys; parents, brothers: Jack, Glen; sisters: Nel, Annie, Mary, Bertha, Mitzi.
Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2020, 1:30 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery. In Lieu of Flowers Memorials preferred to Douglas County Hospice.
