Samuel Martin

Samuel Rogers Martin was born March 5, 1931 in Amo Township near Windom, MN, to Samuel W. and Lillian (Sheldorf) Martin. He attended school until moving, with his father, to a farm near Kensington, MN in 1947. Samuel graduated from Kensington High School in 1949. On December 30, 1950 Samuel entered the US Air Force and served during the Korean Police Action. Sam flew many missions to the Far East, returning to Boston, MA. Sam received his discharge from the service in 1955. On November 30, 1957 Samuel was united in marriage to Joyce Johnson at St. Luke?s Lutheran Church in Garfield, MN. The couple was blessed with two children, a son, Lonnie and a daughter, Karen. In 1961 Sam graduated from Moorhead State University. He worked for Federated Insurance Company for thirty-one years as a premium auditor. Sam took a medical retirement on January 1, 1992. Sam was a longtime member of Oscar Lake Lutheran Church near Holmes City, MN. He was a nature lover. Sam liked to do chainsaw-carving of birds and hand-carving of Santas. He loved to spend time hunting and fishing. A garden was a must for Sam until 2006. Sam enjoyed spending time and working on his forty-acre hobby farm. On Tuesday, April 8, 2008 Sam died at the age of seventy-seven years. He will be missed very much. Sam is survived by his wife, Joyce of Farwell, MN; son, Lonnie Martin of Farwell; daughter, Karen and husband, James Ross, of Sauk Rapids, MN; grandsons, A1C Bryan Ross and wife, A1C Megan Ross, of Hampton, VA and Shawnden Martin and special friend, Tiffany Erickson, of Osakis, MN; granddaughters, Brianna Ross and Kalie Ross of Sauk Rapids; two sisters Lauretta Andreasen of Morris, MN and Lillian Bacon of Lyons, NE; sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held Thursday, April 10, 2008 at Anderson Funeral Home. Reverend Denise Croskey officiated. Pam Anderson provided music. Interment will be in Oscar Lake Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home.
