Sandra Berger

Sandra Jeanne Froiland was born on February 24, 1945 in Thief River Falls, MN the daughter of Ben and Verna (Liden) Froiland. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls. Sandy was raised and educated in Thief River Falls where she graduated from high school. Following high school she attended Luther College in Decorah, IA. Following college, Sandy returned to Thief River Falls where she worked for Dr. Orion Beich OD. On June 15, 1974 Sandy was united in marriage to Reverend Lloyd Berger at Trinity Lutheran in Thief River Falls. The couple made their home in Thief River Falls until May of 1976 when they moved to Clinton, MN where Lloyd was called to serve in Trinity Lutheran Church of Clinton. The couple was blessed with three children, Matthew, Kristi and Sarah. Sandy served as the secretary of the Trinity Education Committee for many years and as the church secretary for about ten years before retiring. She was also very active in the women?s circle and Bible studies. The bulk of her time was spent lovingly caring for her family, but Sandy also liked to refinish furniture, do cross-stitch and collect figurines of gnomes and Santas. Although she would not admit it, Sandy was a great cook and even mastered some Korean cuisine, much to the delight of her daughters. She especially enjoyed decorating and baking for family get-togethers at Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving. She liked to make family birthdays special with her homemade birthday cakes. Family has always been important to them, so following their retirement in 2004, Lloyd and Sandy moved to Alexandria, MN where they could be centrally located to their family. Sandy was a member of Shalom Lutheran Church in Alexandria. She also was a member of the Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Retired Pastors and Spouses Association of Alexandria. On Monday, June 2, 2008 Sandy died at the age of sixty-three years. Her parents, Ben & Verna Froiland, preceded her in death. Sandy is survived by her husband, Rev. Lloyd Berger of Alexandria; one son, Matthew Berger of Worthington, MN; two daughters, Kristi and husband, Mike Malmgren, of Apple Valley, MN and Sarah and husband, Bryan Herr, of Minneapolis, MN; one brother, Barry and wife, Susan Froiland of Thief River Falls; and nieces and nephews, Reid, Taylor, Dane and Marah Froiland. A funeral service was held Thursday, June 5, 2008 at Shalom Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Reverend Grant Aaseng and Reverend Rollen Halvorson officiated. Reid and Dane Froiland provided music. Interment was in Forest Hill Cemetery in Duluth, MN. Casket bearers included Bruce Grosland, Bryan Herr, Mike Malmgren, David Moeller, Rev. Ron Otterson, and Jim Schroeder. Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
