Sara Jo-Wittkowski Schmidt, 40 years young, of Alexandria, Minnesota was taken from us, due to an unforeseen heart attack on May 21, 2023. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria at 11:00 a.m. A public visitation will take place Tuesday, May 30, 2023 at Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria from 4:00-7:00 p.m., as well as one hour prior to services on Wednesday.
Sara was born on April 6, 1983 to Joannie and Wes Wittkowski in St. Cloud, Minnesota. She attended Clearwater Elementary School, Monticello High School, and St. Cloud State University.
In 2004, Sara welcomed her beloved daughter, Morgan Wittkowski (age 19), and on August 9, 2014 Sara was united in marriage to Abram Schmidt. Together, the two welcomed a son, Zander (age 6), making their family of four complete – along with Dexter, Boone, and the old cat, Texas.
For the past eleven years, Sara worked at American Solutions as a senior data analyst. She enjoyed her work, and her quick wit made her good at it. She was very smart and if she didn’t know the answer to a question or problem, she would certainly find it.
Beyond her intellect, Sara was also known for her compassion. At the age of 14 she began volunteering at Camp Friendship Summer Camp. She also became the youngest recipient of the “Kare 11 TV – 11 Who Care” award. Despite her stubborn nature, she loved to give and receive, and to do so without recognition.
Sara loved adventure. One of the highlights in her college years was a trip she took to South Africa for her studies in communication. And, she especially loved the outdoors – hiking, snowmobiling, camping, riding ATVs, and adding to her continuously growing agate collection. She also enjoyed quieter activities like gardening, yard work, and bird watching. She loved birds to come visit and delighted in the birdfeeder Abram recently got for her for Mother’s Day.
Music was also a passion of Sara’s. She enjoyed attending many concerts, but none more than John Prine, who she had the privilege of meeting and visiting with. Sara also was a big fan of Cloud Cult.
Sara will be remembered for her infectious laughter and big smile. Two words commonly used to describe her were “funny” and “sweet.” And although she loved her work and helping others, the very most important thing to her was her husband, children, and many family and friends. She had SO MUCH LOVE for those she cared for. BUT most important was how much she so loved and cherished her husband, children, family and friends…so much love!!!!
Sara is survived by her husband, Abram Schmidt of Alexandria; children: Morgan Wittkowski and Zander Schmidt; parents, Joannie and Wes Wittkowski; aunts: Jody (Doug) Albers and Janet Linn; mother and father-in-law, Wanda and Darryl Schmidt; brother and sisters-in-law: Aaron (Natalie) Schmidt, Ali Schmidt, April Schmidt; as well as many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. She is preceded in death by her sister, Jesika Wittkowski; and uncles: Ed, Denny, Chuck, and Jim Sigler, Joe Linn.
