Shirley Elgie
1933 – 2022
Shirley, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother went to be with her Lord and Savior on December 13th at the age of 89.
She was born on January 25, 1933 at the family farm in Hankinson, North Dakota to George and Margaret Schultz. She graduated from Hankinson High School and completed her education at the State Teachers College in Valley City North Dakota. Shirley then started her teaching career in Brockton, Montana, and began her legacy of the love and education of children. It was also in Brockton that the blue eyed farm girl met the love of her life, Marvin Elgie. Shirley and Marvin were married on December 20, 1952. Marvin was a railroad man and his job took them to Whitefish, Montana and then to Saint Paul, Minnesota. In retirement they moved to Alexandria, Minnesota. Throughout her life Shirley was always taking care of others. She raised their three children, taught school, provided day care for many children and was the best baby sitter to her grandchildren. She later finished her working career at West Publishing as a proofreader. She was true to her faith through various church groups and teaching Sunday school and still found time for golf and cards with family and friends. She loved Christmas and making it special for her family with wonderful meals and desserts!
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and brother Allen as well as many treasured brothers and sisters in-law. She is survived by her loving husband Marvin, her daughters Karen Jefferson (Barry) and Kathy Haugen (Kevin) and son Rocky (Elizabeth); eight grandchildren Kristin, Dana, Jacob, Emily, Ashley, Carly, Adam and Grant as well as seven great-grandchildren and her sister Margie Hoglin (Dick). The funeral service will be at 11:00am on Wednesday, December 28th with visitation one-hour prior at Calvary Lutheran Church in Alexandria (605 Douglas Street). Private interment at Kinkead Cemetery.
