Shirley Ann (Sembrick) Nelson was born on August 4, 1935, at home in Winger, Minnesota the daughter of Oscar & Caroline (Rost) Sembrick. She was the youngest of five children and due to her mother’s illness went to live with Foster Parents Eugene & Anna (Botner) Erickson at nine months. Shirley was baptized and confirmed at Lima Lutheran Church. She attended Gassen School District #22 through the 8th grade and attended McIntosh High School through the 11th grade.
In 1952, Shirley and her mother, Anna moved to Alexandria to be by Anna’s brothers. She graduated from Central High School in 1953 and then moved to St. Louis Park, MN with her long time childhood friend, Burnell Hanson. She started work at Employers Mutual Insurance Company.
Shirley was united in marriage to DuWayne Nelson on May 29, 1954 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Alexandria. She started working at Douglas County Hospital as a nursing assistant in April of 1956. Her ability to speak and understand Swedish was often useful when dealing with elderly patients.
Shirley enjoyed dancing, gardening and writing letters to her family. She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and spent over 20 years coordinating the volunteers.
Shirley died on Tuesday, August 26, 2014. She is survived by her children’s father DuWayne Nelson; children: Carol & Jay McDonald, Carmen & Jeff Ouverson, Curt & Wendy Nelson, Camilla & Jeff Haiskanen; nine grandchildren: James, Michael, Jeremy, Sarah, Aaron, Amy, Amanda, Cody & Brady, sister, Mavis Barrow; brother, Ken Sembrick; many nieces, nephews, special cousin, Bonnie Larson; friend, Dena Worman.
She was preceded in death by her parents, foster parents, two brothers, three nephews and two nieces.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2014, 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home. www.andersonfuneral.net
